Perinatal Mood & Anxiety Disorders
Approximately 21% of women experience perinatal mood disorders (PMADs) in the year after giving birth. These disorders include depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, and (rarely) psychosis. When a mother suffers from PMAD her partner and children suffer too. PMAD is truly a family affair, and left untreated it can cause significant damage to a woman's sense of herself as a mother, to the long term cognitive and emotional development of the child, and to the marital relationship. Therapy can help you to:
Identify your risk level for developing PMAD
Make concrete plans to prevent and/or reduce symptoms of PMAD
Design a unique self care program with your history and your family in mind
Offer guidance and support to your partner and other family members
